They made a mistake. It should be "THE seat in front of you". "Under your seat" is indeed straight down from your rear end.

I guess you're still talking about airplane travel with "to get a few people ahead". I can only guess without more information, but if you're talking about how it is when your plane has stopped at the gate to unload, but the door hasn't opened yet, and everybody stands up to get their stuff from the overhead and then just stands there blocking the aisle even after the door opens, then a person might do something like climb through the center seats to "get a few people ahead", meaning to be closer to the front of the line by moving to a position in the line ahead of a few people who would otherwise have been behind him.
